They're Doing across America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the president try to upend the established notion of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater as well.

The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ of the gospels requests a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been great solace to help build the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to what makes it unique and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest pretending the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it means both modesty and faith, a mixture that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
