The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
