Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
