EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
